Christmas at St Michael’s

We would love to invite you to our Christmas celebrations,  in the hope that Christmas will be a time of peace and joy in the community of Stoke Gifford.

Jesus was given several ‘titles’. ‘Prince of Peace’ is perhaps the least well known. How “peaceful” will your house be this Christmas? How ‘peaceful’ will the world be this festive season? Why isn’t the ‘Prince of peace’ doing his thing!

Exhaustion and stress have been part of Christmas from the very start. Not only did Mary and Joseph have to travel for days to visit their in-laws, they ended up sleeping rough in a farm building. The Saviour born in a shelter. Peace-less!

In English, the word “peace” conjures up a passive picture. An absence of civil disturbance or hostilities. The biblical concept of peace starts small and then has worldwide implications. It is summarized in a word still used by Jewish communities. Shalom.Jesus is the prince of ‘Shalom’, peace brought between two parties.Jesus still brings peace into lives.

When we invite Him, he brings God’s peace into our lives. Feel ashamed, receive the peace of forgiveness. Feel lonely, know the peace of friendship. Feel troubled, know the peace of stillness.

When my life encounters the Peace of God, I am then strengthened to ‘live peace out’. The world really can become more peaceful one person at a time.

Have a lovely, peace filled Christmas time,

Simon Jones – Rector St Michael’s
