Wills, Probate & Powers of Attorney Workshop

Wills, Probate & Powers of Attorney Workshop

We are all getting older! But wouldn’t it be great to know that all our affairs are in order so that those we leave behind don’t have to worry?
Wills are about what happens after we die.
Powers of Attorney cover the common situation when we are still here but are incapacitated (for whatever reason) to handle our affairs.
We’re hosting a free workshop on Saturday 28 September in St Michael’s Centre, starting at 10am, and finishing at 12pm.

The speaker is Heledd Wyn, a Partner in the Bristol-based law firm of Shakespeare Martineau Solicitors (formerly Gregg Latchams) to speak at this workshop. Heledd specialises in Wills, Probate, Estates, Trusts, Tax and Powers of Attorney, and she belongs to the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP), an organisation for solicitors and others specialising in such matters, which carries out its own professional qualifications.

Areas covered in the workshop:
•Wills
•Powers of Attorney
•Inheritance tax
• Care Home fees

If you have yet to make a will, or need to update your will, or enquire about Powers of Attorney, or are considering Care Home provision, then please come along to Seminar Room S2 in the new St Michael’s Church Centre for an informative and stimulating workshop.

Please sign up for your free place.

Ordinations

Ordinations

On Saturday 29 June Revd Ellie Huggins is being ordained as priest! This is the next stage in her curacy, and we are so excited to share in this as church family.

Ellie says “For a long time I felt the Lord calling me into leadership in the church. It’s been a very long journey, but it just feels like the culmination, as it’s recognised within the church that this is something that God is calling me to. I am really excited about the opportunities that will now open up. I can’t wait to preside at Communion, and I’m really excited for what the Lord has in this next chapter

The ordination service is at 3pm on Saturday 29 June at Bristol Cathedral. All are welcome to come along (arrive early to get a seat!)

Also that weekend Catriona Rawlins and Megan Barrick are being ordained as Deacon, which is the first stage of their curacies. Catriona has been on placement with us this year, and Megan was with us as a youth worker before her vicar training. The service is at 10.30am on Sunday 30 June at Bristol Cathedral.

Do join in with praying for Ellie, Catriona and Megan as they continue into the next stage of their calling.

Ascension Day Prayer Gathering

Thursday 9 May is our next Whole Church Prayer Gathering, and we are combining that with communion for Ascension Day.

It starts at 7.30pm in St Michael’s Church, and we will be worshipping together (worship accessible for all congregations), praying together, listening to what God is calling us too, and sharing communion.

For those who would like to, we are encouraging people to fast for the day as well.

Lent 2024

Lent began with our Ash Wednesday Communion Service on 14 February at 7.30pm in church.

This lovely service included the opportunity to be signed with the cross in ash, as we began this season of reflection.

If you missed it, you can catch up online here

Lent Sermon Series

This Lent we are looking at the practice of Fasting, as part of our teaching series, Practicing the Way, where we learn habits to help us become more like Jesus.

We will be looking at fasting from the following topic headings:

  • To offer ourselves to Jesus. (See Si’s talk here and Julie’s talk here)
  • To grow in holiness. (See Ellies’s talk here)
  • To amplify our prayers (See Tom’s talk here)
  • To stand with the poor  (See Chris’s talk here and Trevor’s talk here)

More details on the practice of fasting here

Lent Reading

This year’s recommended Lent reading is “Practicing the Way: Be with Jesus. Become like him. Live as he did: Be with Jesus. Become like him. Do as he did” by John Mark Comer (Available from all good book stores ISBN  0281086672 and currently on offer on Amazon ))

This book was released in January 2024 and complements not only our Lent sermon series on Fasting but other spiritual practices such as Sabbath which we focussed on in 2023.

The Rule of Life podcast is a great alternative if you can’t access the book.

There is also a newly released podcast specifically on the book – listen on spotify here.
