Join the St Michael’s Electoral Roll

At St Michael’s we want to live to make a difference, by being a Christian heart at the centre of our communities.  If St Michael’s is your home church we encourage you to join the electoral roll.

The Electoral Roll is the Church of England’s official register of who worships with us here at St Michael’s. If you’re not currently on the roll, we would love you to sign-up.

If you completed a form for the 2019 -2025 electoral roll (the past five years ) you do not need to complete one again, unless your details have changed.

The application deadline is Sunday 7 April to ensure it is completed by our Annual Meeting on 24 April.

Why have an Electoral Roll?

It is your parish church register of electors. It is the list of those qualified to attend and to vote at the Annual Parochial Church Meeting where the elections take place for the Parochial Church Council and the parish’s representatives on the Deanery Synod.  Any person entitled to attend the Annual Church Parochial Meeting may raise any question of parochial or general church interest.

How do I join the Electoral Roll?

You can join the electoral roll online by filling in the form below.
Alternatively, you can complete a paper form and return it to the church office.

How do I know if I am resident in the parish?

You can use a Church Near You to determine whether your home address falls within St Michael’s parish boundaries or not.

Lent 2024

Lent began with our Ash Wednesday Communion Service on 14 February at 7.30pm in church.

This lovely service included the opportunity to be signed with the cross in ash, as we began this season of reflection.

If you missed it, you can catch up online here

Lent Sermon Series

This Lent we are looking at the practice of Fasting, as part of our teaching series, Practicing the Way, where we learn habits to help us become more like Jesus.

We will be looking at fasting from the following topic headings:

  • To offer ourselves to Jesus. (See Si’s talk here and Julie’s talk here)
  • To grow in holiness. (See Ellies’s talk here)
  • To amplify our prayers (See Tom’s talk here)
  • To stand with the poor  (See Chris’s talk here and Trevor’s talk here)

More details on the practice of fasting here

Lent Reading

This year’s recommended Lent reading is “Practicing the Way: Be with Jesus. Become like him. Live as he did: Be with Jesus. Become like him. Do as he did” by John Mark Comer (Available from all good book stores ISBN  0281086672 and currently on offer on Amazon ))

This book was released in January 2024 and complements not only our Lent sermon series on Fasting but other spiritual practices such as Sabbath which we focussed on in 2023.

The Rule of Life podcast is a great alternative if you can’t access the book.

There is also a newly released podcast specifically on the book – listen on spotify here.

Welcome Lunch

Are you new to St Michael’s, or joined us within the last 6 months or so?

Fasting

This Lent we have been looking at the practice of Fasting, as part of our teaching series, Practicing the Way, where we learn habits to help us become more like Jesus.

We looked at fasting from the following topic headings:

  • To offer ourselves to Jesus. (See Si’s talk here and Julie’s talk here)
  • To grow in holiness. (See Ellies’s talk here)
  • To amplify our prayers (See Tom’s talk here)
  • To stand with the poor  (See Chris’s talk here and Trevor’s talk here)

What is fasting?

Fasting is one of the best practices we can do to integrate our entire person, including our body, around God.

The Bible links the practice of fasting with justice, with discernment, and with answered prayer. Jesus commended it – so it deserves our attention!

Biblically, fasting primarily involves abstaining from food to varying degrees and for varying periods.

We are well aware that this will not be appropriate for everyone.

There are no shoulds and oughts when it comes to fasting, and like with all the practices, this is invitational.

We can’t use the practices to control our formation or even our relationship with God. Our goal isn’t to control our formation but to surrender to Jesus, and fasting is one way we can do this.

What if I can’t fast?

Some of us may not be able to fast food at the moment, due to a health issue or a season of life. See here for a list people who should not fast without professional/medical supervision.

If you are unable to fast food for whatever reason then you may want to consider abstaining from media/your phone/shopping, or anything that will enable you to ‘go without so you can grow within’.

First Steps

  • Pick a day that works for you.
  • Start with something manageable – We suggest you try fasting one or two meals. The goal is to make fasting a part of your regular life, not try it once or twice, hate it and never try it again. Start where you are, not where you feel like you ‘should’ be.
  • If you can do this with others in your life group or community, that can be helpful and encouraging.
  • Drink lots of water.
  • In the times you would be eating or preparing food perhaps read the bible,  pray, worship. Let your desire for food point you to Jesus as you open yourself to him.

Remember

  • As Jesus encouraged it, fasting is personal and private, discretely undertaken and not publicly broadcast.
  • Fasting may have some side benefits to health and well-being, but it’s important to know from the Bible what it is for and not for. See below.
  • If you start fasting with (or to be precise, without!) food, take your doctor’s advice if you are pregnant, or have medical conditions like diabetes that might be affected. Children should not be fasting.
  • When your fasting saves you time or money – consider how to use these savings wisely!

For more information on the following questions you may have, we recommend this excellent guide from Bill Bright:

Fast Forward: The Untapped Catalyst to Spiritual Growth. A short free booklet by Lisa Bevere, on the topic of fasting (especially for women). It’s partly biographical, and partly inspirational/educational. See it here.
Bridgetown Church resources are also excellent – they are free but a little harder to access as it’s part of a programme (you can create an account/sign up). However, you can find their main PDF resource on the practice of fasting here.

Kintsugi Hope Wellbeing Group

We are currently planning a daytime course. Please email Jess and Abbie if you would be interested in joining.

How is your emotional wellbeing?

After the last few years it may well have taken a bit of a battering!  Maybe you are struggling with anxiety, depression, anger, grief or stress or maybe you are supporting someone dealing with these issues…

They are all very normal emotions; so please know that you are not alone!

Why not consider joining a 6 week wellbeing programme being run by St Michael’s Church, Stoke Gifford?

It’s called Kintsugi Hope and is based on the belief that there can be treasure found in the scars of life.

Each week, in a small, safe and supportive group, we will look at subjects rarely talked about in depth such as : Honesty, anxiety, depression, perfectionism, shame and anger.

The aim of this shared journey is to gain support, understanding and tools that will enable us to become more resilient.

Kintsugi groups are suitable both for people of faith and for those with none.

Please email Jess and Abbie if you have any questions

Who is it For?

The stress and demands of modern living can take their toll on our mental health and wellbeing.

Many of us may feel the effect but not fully understand the cause. There has been a tendency in our society to not talk about our struggles yet ….” healing starts the moment we are heard!”

So the vision of Kintsugi Hope is to provide a place where people can experience :

  • Safety and support where there is no shame and embarrassment in struggling
  • An increase in self worth, confidence and wellbeing
  • A deeper understanding of the reality of Gods love for them.
  • Clear pathways to receive additional support if needed

What it’s not….

It is not therapy – there are no leaders or experts.

For this reason it would not be suitable for those with a more serious diagnosed mental illness.

If you feel this might be for you and you’d like to find out more or would like to sign up for a group please email kintsugi@stmichaelsbristol.org

Comments from previous participants:

“ I looked and listened to others in the room who I presumed had their lives sorted and realised that it wasn’t just me , that I wasn’t alone in my struggles”

“ The materials and resources covered have provided me with a metaphorical tool box to refer to on difficult days”

“ I’ve learnt about myself, what God wants for me and that there’s a better way, a better life in Him, as He intended”

“ I wish there had been something like this years ago! I needn’t have struggled for so long in silence”

“ I’ve realised ‘it’s OK not to be OK’ and that this was the first step to me acknowledging where I was at, having the desire to make changes, seek further and move forwards”

“The Kintsugi Hope Group allowed me to be honest with myself amongst a group of people where there was no judgement and who I could trust. It helped me to understand myself in a  better way”

One final comment …. “ We HAVE to do this …it’s the heart of the gospel!”

Bible Reading Plans for 2024

Deepen Your Connection with God in 2024: Recommended Bible Reading Plans

As we approach a new year, many of us look for ways to refresh and renew our lives. For Christians, one of the most enriching ways to do this is to deepen our connection with God through Scripture. Engaging with the Bible daily brings spiritual growth, and guides our everyday lives.

If you’re looking for a Bible reading plan for 2024, we’ve pulled together a few options that may help in choosing a plan that’s right for you: Whether you’re a seasoned reader or just starting out, there’s a plan to help you dive deeper into God’s Word.

The Bible with Nicky and Pippa Gumbel (formerly The Bible in One Year) is an excellent free resource from the team that produces the Alpha Course   You can read it directly on the website, listen wherever you access podcasts, download an app, or purchase a book.  There are three different plans: Classic, Youth, and Express.

The YouVersion Bible App is also an excellent resource for different lengths of reading plans as well as one-year plans.  Many of us have this app already on our phones. The above options have accompanying commentary to help us in our reading.  But some of us may prefer to just have the plan without the commentary:

The Bible Project has available a downloadable and printable one-year reading plan.  You can find that here.

Blue Letter Bible has a downloadable chronological plan here.

And there are many more out there.

Some tips:

  • Choose a plan that fits your lifestyle and goals. Don’t be afraid to experiment and find what works best for you.
  • Be consistent. Even a few minutes of daily reading can make a big difference.
  • Engage with the text. Ask questions, take notes, and reflect on what you read.
  • Pray. Ask God to open your heart and mind to His Word.
  • Consider Reading along with your Life Group. Sharing insights with others can deepen our understanding and enrich our experience.

We encourage everyone to explore the many Bible reading plans available and find one that resonates with you. May 2024 be a year filled with rich blessings and a closer walk with God!

Remembrance Sunday

Sunday 12 November is Remembrance Sunday

Our ten-thirty will begin outside with everyone gathering around the war memorial on The Green at 10.25am.  If you are worshipping at the nine o’clock, why not stay for coffee and then attend the act of Remembrance?

We will be joined by the Royal British Legion, and local Uniformed Groups. A short act of Remembrance will take place, with the laying of wreaths and 2 minutes silence.

After this everyone else will gather in the auditorium in St Michael’s Centre, from there, our young people will go to their groups in the usual places.  Our live-streamed online service will begin at approximately 10.45am.

All Saints Day Service of Thanksgiving & Remembrance

Join us on Wednesday 1 November at 7.30pm in church or online.

This simple service enables those who have experienced the loss of someone they love, to give thanks and remember their loved ones before God.

It may be that you have been bereaved in the recent or distant past… or maybe you know someone who is still struggling to come to terms with a loss – why not think about inviting them to come along?

Gift Day for Ministry and Mission 2023

Jesus makes a difference. He gives so much to us. Will you give back to Him?

Click here to respond. Click here to see our financial questions and answers.

Here at St Michael’s, our giving helps so much to happen!

Together we can make a difference.

We are called to be a Christian heart at the centre of our communities.

When we give, we help God’s work to happen.

If those who currently give, could increase our giving by £5 a week, alongside fifty new givers, giving £10 a week, and twenty-five new givers giving £20 a week, our annual deficit would vanish.

Please think and pray about what you might give this year. Either as a one-off payment or a monthly standing order payment.

We invite everyone at St Michael’s to count ourselves in by giving. Our generosity helps us to Learn and Grow, Share Jesus and Serve….TOGETHER!

St Michael’s Church Refurbishment Project

The church building is important to our community and to our worship.

We are committed to protectingpreserving and enhancing the building as our legacy for generations to come.

In recent years, we have spent a considerable sum on building work to the tower, stonework, boundary wall and new roofs.

Over the past couple of years we have been looking to improve safety, visibility and accessibility inside the church building.

We are excited to move forward on this, making our church building, fit for generations to come, whilst honouring it’s history.

At our Gift Day for buildings and resources in June 2020, we had a reminder of the four key ambitions for the Heart of the Community project:

  • Create a spacious modern meeting place in the centre of the community
  • Restore our historic church building for generations to come
  • Upgrade our existing community rooms
  • Fund outreach and anti-poverty projects locally, nationally and internationally

These refurbishments come under the second of these ambitions.

Updates

July 2023

Over the past year we have discovered that the pillars in the church have historical significance. Therefore there have been significant changes to the original scope of the plan. You can read the latest update here. We are still working towards DAC approval.

May 2022

Following the application being resubmitted, the Diocesan Advisory Committee (DAC) will now consult the amenity societies (Church Buildings Council, Historic England, Georgian Group, Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings) to seek their views. This is equivalent to applying for Civil
Planning Permission, but in an ecclesiastical context.

A finance availability timeline is being drawn up and we now have a potential start date of Autumn 2023.

March 2022

A positive meeting was held with the Diocesan Advisory Committee (DAC) in church on 17 February. A written response has been received, and the DAC are broadly supportive of our aims. They had some comments which the steering group and architect are addressing.  We aim to resubmit the application again in April.

November 2021

The Faculty (license to make physical alterations) application has been put to the Diocesan  Advisory Committee ( DAC) and a positive response was received.  We will be responding to their initial questions and we will then resubmit the application

We have received three tenders, and an initial meeting with the preferred contractor will be arranged for an initial discussion.

Due to the complexities of the application, as well as rising costs, the start date of the refurbishment is now unlikely to be before Autumn 2022

The steering group continues to meet regularly and reports back to the PCC.

September 2021

The project specification has been sent out to tender with a full tender package supporting it.

There are two documents which we wanted to share:

Proposed plan – click here

Proposed plan for toilets  – click here

The preference for  flooring and chairs have also been decided on.

If you have any questions regarding these plans please do get in touch.

 August 2021

The trial digs earlier in the year were successful and plans have been drawn up. The next step is for the plans to be put out to tender. Once these tenders have been received we can go to the Diocesan Advisory Committee (DAC) for approval of the faculty. We hope to be able to then start works in the New Year.

The steering group (chaired by Simon) and Church Fabric Committee have also chosen the chairs and flooring for  post-refurb.

March 2021

We pleased to say that DAC List B permission has now been granted to proceed with the investigatory digs in the floor. After liaising with the contractor and archaeologist for a suitable date this will now take place week commencing 8 March. We’re excited to be moving forward and look forward to the results of the trial digs.

January 2021

Before starting the works, we must get approval from the Diocesan Advisory Committee (DAC).   They asked us to appoint an archaeologist to investigate the history of the church building and to oversee a number of trial digs. The digs are to confirm that there are no burials under the existing floor, so we know whether underfloor heating is viable.

We’re pleased to say that the archaeologist has been appointed and has started to research the history of the church.  Mogford Prescott Ltd has been appointed to carry out the trial digs. We have applied for a List ‘B’ approval/permission for the archaeological work and trial digs and are awaiting approval from the DAC.

As soon as we’ve received this, our architect will coordinate with the Archaeologist and contractor to start five trial digs.

Thank you Julie

Many of us will be aware that Revd Canon Julie Bradley is retiring from full-time ministry and stepping back from the Core Leadership Team.

To mark this, we are having a Thank you service followed by refreshments on Saturday 1 July at 4pm.
We would love as many people as possible to come along. Everyone is welcome as we mark this moment,  thank Julie for all she has done, and thank God for her and her ministry.

It would help us to have an idea of numbers, so if you are planning to come, please do sign-up here

The service will be live-streamed via our YouTube channel on this link.
